Julia, a young and ambitious writer, takes a job as an assistant to Michael Price, a successful horror novelist. Over the next few years, Michael serves as her mentor, friend, and adversary, as Julia struggles to make a name for herself in the writing business. But when Michael – blocked, broke, and in desperate need of a manuscript – steals Julia’s book and hands it to his editor as his own, Julia is forced to define what his betrayal means to her, especially since the resulting publicity propels her into a successful literary career. In an emotional scene, she confronts Michael for the last time, and finally decides that their bond of friendship cannot survive under the weight of his betrayal.
